At the end of the district tournament in Adel, there were two Woodward-Granger wrestlers who qualified for state. Race Brant and Colton Milosevich competed at the state wrestling tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines last weekend.
Neither Brant or Milosevich were able to medal and were both knocked out of the tournament by the end of the second day.
Milosevich, who finished in first place at the district tournament in Adel on Feb. 15, won his first match of the tournament in the 120-pound bracket. Milosevich defeated MOC-Floyd Valley’s Connor Ascherl in his first-round match with a 1-minute, 4-second pin in the first period to advance to the quarterfinals on Feb. 21.
Milosevich couldn’t keep his momentum going in the quarterfinals as he fell to Atlantic’s Dillion Cox by way of an 11-0 major decision. Cox went on to get third place at the end of the tournament.
Later that day, Milosevich wrestled in the 120-pound consolation second round against Mediapolis’s Mason Buster. Buster beat Milosevich by way of a 13-3 major decision, which ended the tournament for Milosevich. Buster ultimately lost to Cox in the consolation finals by way of a 5-3 decision and got fourth place at 120 pounds.
Brant finished in second at the district tournament in Adel and qualified for state at 145 pounds. In his first-round match he faced up against Algona’s Austin Long. Long won by way of technical fall in the third period by a score of 15-0.
Brant’s next match was in the consolation first round where he matched up against Jared Eischeid from Carroll Kuemper Catholic. Brant’s tournament run ended as he lost to Eischeid, being pinned in 2 minutes and 41 seconds.
That was Brant’s second loss to Eischeid this season as he lost by fall back on Jan. 9, being pinned in 2 minutes and thirty seconds in their first meeting of the season.
Eischeid went on to get seventh place in the 145-pound bracket.
Brant finished the season with a 37-11 record while Milosevich finished with a record of 42-5.
