Van Meter stopped a Pella Christian two-point conversion attempt with 1:41 left to preserve a 14-13 win on Oct. 11 and with it, the Bulldogs’ undefeated record.

With the win, Van Meter improved to 7-0 on the season and climbed into a tie for seventh place on the Associated Press Class 1A rankings.

The Eagles completed a three-play, 70-yard drive with a 60-yard touchdown pass from Coltin Collins to JAke De Ruiter to pull Pella Christian within one. The Eagles opted for a two-point try to take the lead, but leading rusher Mason Howerzyl was stopped.

Van Meter took a 14-7 lead in the third quarter when Brandon Brittain punched in a score from one yard out to complete a massive 13-play, 99-yard drive that melted nearly 6 minutes off the clock.

The Bulldogs’ first touchdown came in the second quarter on a 14-yard strike from Brittain to Logan Crawford. Brttain passed for 55 yards and ran for another 135, while Cody Blackwell carried 27 times for 152 yards.

Chase Wyant had 13 tackles to pace the defense, while Parker Suckow and Ben Engstrand each had seven.

The Bulldogs travel Friday to Stuart for a non-district game against West Central Valley (3-4) before closing out the regular season Oct. 25 at Des Moines Christian.
