PELLA (IOWA)—Katie Canney, a former student at A-D-M, was recognized for her performance with the Central College softball team.

She earned her second varsity letter as well as team Newcomer of the Year Award (2013) and All-Iowa Conference, second team honors (2014, 2013). She had a .363 batting average with five homeruns and 29 RBIs in 41 games.

Central made a record 26th NCAA Division III tournament appearance, playing host to a four-team regional May 9-11.

Senior shortstop Annie Sarcone (Des Moines) received the team’s LeRoy Timmer Most Valuable Player Award. She hit .433 with seven home runs while knocking in 51 runs, a new school record. Sarcone also received her fourth varsity letter. The senior earlier was honored with a spot on a NFCA all-Midwest regional team for the second time and was named for the third time to the all-Iowa Conference first team. Sarcone set new school career records in home runs (25), runs batted in (172), slugging percentage (.602) and times on base (284). She is also in the all-time top 10 in batting average, hits and doubles.

The Outstanding Defensive Player Award went to sophomore third baseman Whitney Sowers (Marshalltown) for the second consecutive year. Pitcher Trisha Smith (sophomore, New Hampton, New Hampton HS) was given the Most Improved Player Award. The LeRoy Timmer Most Inspirational Award was given to Chelsea Greiner (senior, Agency, Cardinal HS). Greiner, Brie Haycraft (senior, Eldridge, North Scott HS) and Jordan Overland (senior, Boone, Boone HS) were cited for serving as the 2014 team co-captains.

Coach George Wares also awarded 20 varsity letters. Wares completed his 30th season with a 1,007-335-3 career record, making history by becoming the first coach in Division III to post 1,000 career wins.
