There was more than 79 minutes of scoreless soccer played on field nine at Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines on Thursday, but one goal in the first minute was all No. 5 Pleasant Valley needed to upset No. 4 Dallas Center-Grimes in the first round of the girls’ state soccer tournament.
After a bad deflection on a clearing attempt by the Fillies, Pleasant Valley jumped on the loose ball took it into the box and Addie Royer of Pleasant Valley chipped the ball over DC-G keeper Addy Rosa and into the goal to put themselves on top of the Fillies 1-0. That is the way the score would stay and the Fillies saw their season come to an end.
"It’s hard, obviously, against any quality team to start a game that way and we just couldn’t dig ourselves out," DC-G coach Dan James said after the loss. "After that first one, I thought our girls played well… We got ourselves some quality looks, we just didn’t capitalize and that’s the game of soccer."
Pleasant Valley now moves on to play against Waverly-Shell Rock today in the semifinals of the state tournament at 2:45 at Cownie Soccer Park.
