Sophomore Mckenzie Smith went back-to-back-to-back Monday as Dallas Center-Grimes blanked Carroll, 7-0, in Raccoon River Conference girls’ soccer play in Carroll.
Smith’s hat trick — within a three-minute period — provided the Fillies with their first three goals of the second half as the score ballooned to 5-0.
Goals by soph Brooke Jacobsen and senior Rachel McCarthy gave DC-G a 2-0 edge at halftime before Smith’s quick goals broke it open.
Six minutes into the second half, Smith connected on her first goal. The second came two minutes later and she completed the hat trick just 60 seconds later.
Lexi Rosa scored the final two goals for the Fillies at the 56- and 60-minute marks. Her first goal came on an assist by Allison O’Brien.
"This provided us some good opportunities to fix a few of our team breakdowns from the last couple of games," DC-G Coach Dan James said. "After the Johnston game, we had to regroup and our girls came out an adjusted to some of the things we wanted them to change — but we’re still adjusting to some new roles and responsibiliies and it was good to see them start to do that."
James said the Fillies played well the entire game against Carroll, but just couldn’t consistently put the ball in the back of the net in the first half.
"It was good to see our backs getting three goals in the game and making us a more dynamic team overall," he said.
The Fillies, 4-1 overall, will host Carlisle on Friday, then entertains Winterset next Tuesday and hosts No. 6-ranked Adel-DeSoto-Minburn next Thursday.
James and his team are guarding against a letdown against Carlisle.
"Carlisle has improved over the last couple of years and is 3-1 this year. We’re preparing for a good game against them."
