The Woodward-Granger wrestling team traveled north to Ackley on Jan. 18 and came away with a third-place team finish at the Wags Invitational.
Ten Hawks placed and five reached championship matches. Of those, 120-pounder Colton Milosevich and 195-pounder Dylan Nixon captured titles.
Milosevich improved to 28-1 on the season with a tw0-victory day. He pinned Kolton Fryslie of AGWSR in 2:24, then stuck Belmond-Klemme’s Zach Andrews in the first period of the championship match.
Nixon jumped to 8-1 with a trio of wins. He recorded pins in each of his first two matches, then earned a decisive championship bout over AGWSR’s Caleb Meinders, 15-5. It was just the second loss for Meinders in 28 matches this season.
Race Brant (145), Tanner Vermaas (160) and Josh Groves (220) all finished second. Brant recorded two falls to improve to 26-5, Vermaas added one pin for his 20th win of the season, and Groves captured two first-period pins, including a 20-second pin of West Fork’s Tanner Shreckengost in the semifinal, before he fell by fall to AGWSR’s Clay Meinders in the finale.
Collen Gibbons (152) finished third and Thomas Govig (170) was fourth.
The Hawks finished the 10-team tournament with a score of 165, trailing only tournament host AGWSR (198) and runner-up Belmond-Klemme (171 1/2).
