The Waukee boys’ tennis team took second place at the Johnston Invitational on April 6.
Drew Hays finished second in the first-flight singles competition with a 3-1 mark, while Mac Delsol took the top spot in the second flight with four victories.
Jake Kuyper and Mike Sylvester went 4-0 to win the No. 1 doubles flight. Tyler Kruzan and Sandeep Yeturu finished second in the second flight, as did Chase Hanson and Evan Hansen in the third flight and Collin Farrell and Dillon Lauridsen in the fourth flight.
The Waukee girls’ team finished third, recording team victories over Johnston and Pella Christian. The Warriors tied Newton and Fort Dodge and lost to West Des Moines Valley.
Junior Kayla Kuethe, a two-time state qualifier, won the first-flight singles division with a perfect 5-0 mark. In the second flight, Sara Wadle had a 6-4 win against Johnston and a 6-0 win against Pella Christian.
The No. 2 doubles team of Bridget Tunink and Sydney Graham won three matches in five tries, including back-to-back 6-1 victories over Fort Dodge and Pella Christian. The No. 1 doubles team of Jean Robles and Olivia Lacona fell in a narrow decision to Newton, 7-6.
The Warrior girls swept through their season opener against Indianola, beating the Indians 11-0 on April 4. Kuethe, Wadle, Brianna Young, Lacona, Taylor Brown and Robles were all victiorious in singles play.
