Tyus Mason ran in a 61-yard touchdown with 1:06 to play to lift third-ranked West Des Moines Valley past Waukee 24-17 on Aug. 30.

Waukee, ranked ninth by the Associated Press, had taken the lead earlier in the fourth quarter on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Ben Ferkin to Trevor Volk.

Ferkin, a sophomore making his first varsity start, was 8-of-25 passing for 155 yards and two touchdowns, throwing a 25-yard touchdown pass to Alex Sturm as well. But Valley crowded the box and limited the speedy Trevor Allen to a 2.8 yard-per-carry average on 18 rushing attempts.

Sturm caught four passes for 79 yards, and Michael Jacobson had one catch for 37 yards. Isaac Bruns added a 30-yard field goal.

Nick Tweeten had two sacks, and Patrick Gray collcted a team-high seven tackles. A.J. Allen and Kyle Boulanger each had six.

Mason ran for 194 yards and two touchdowns, while Drew Gray added 120 yards.

Waukee looks to bounce back at home on Friday against Marshalltown. The Bobcats dropped a 38-13 decision to Pella in week one.
