The Van Meter and Woodward-Granger baseball teams have advanced in their respective district tournaments, and are a step closer to the state tournament. Van Meter, in Class 2A, District 15 defeated Panorama 16-6 on Tuesday night in Van Meter, while Woodward-Granger, in Class 1A, District 14 defeated Glidden-Ralston by a score of 9-2.

The Bulldogs were tied with Panorama 4-4 after two innings before opening the scoring up and ending the game in six innings with five runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Kyle Schmitt got the start for the Bulldogs at pitcher and picked up the win despite allowing four runs and striking out only one batter in three innings pitched.

Jacob Eslick, Schmitt, Brandon Brittain, Logan Crawford and Ben Engstrand scored two runs each in the game and Zach Forret scored three runs. Ross Wesselman batted in Schmitt’s spot after he exited the game and went 1-for-1 with three-RBI double.

Colton Boswell, who started the game as the designated hitter, and also came into to relieve Schmitt on the mound, also had three RBIs. Brittain and Crawford had two RBIs each while Crawford also had two stolen bases.

The Hawks of Woodward-Granger lost four-straight games going into the district tournament, but six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning lifted them to a 9-2 win. Dylan Garland pitched all seven innings, struck out five batters, walked one and gave up five hits and two runs en route to the win.

Short stop Jake Smiley had four stolen bases in the game on a 1-for-3 performance at the plate while batting one run in and scoring one himself.

Alex Boderman went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, two stolen bases and a run scored.

The Bulldogs move on to the district finals where they will play Ogden in Van Meter on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Hawks will play in the district semifinals at Coon Rapids-Bayard on Thursday at 7 p.m.
