The young volleyball squad from Woodward-Granger has to start the year with a largely rebuilt lineup, and the Hawks struggled against a strong field at the season-opening Bondurant-Farrar Invitational on Aug. 31.
Spread over three sites, the 16-team field featured five ranked teams and several others will strong squads, with some teams switching locales after completing their three games in pool play.
W-G (2-4) stared the day at Anderson Elementary, where the Hawks fell to Des Moines Roosevelt (21-9, 21-9) and North Polk (18-21, 21-14, 21-8) before falling to 3A No. 8 Bondurant-Farrar 2-0.
The Hawks finished at Anderson Elementary, where they fell to Des Moines Christian 21-16, 21-7 but topped West Marshall 21-10, 21-12. W-G also beat Perry, 21-14, 21-15.
Abby Musser tallied 29 kills and Bree Lesch 15 for W-G, with Abby Hansen making 11 kills and Mary Hansen and Cailin Coker 10 each. Musser and Abby Hansen each had two blocks, with Dalaney Bice and Olivia McCune contributing one block each while Mary Hansen provided 41 assists and Maggie Bermel 21 assists.
Tori Manning led the defense with 48 digs, with Musser making 45 digs, Lesch 29, Mary Hansen 23 and Bermel 19.
Manning was 40-45-2 behind the line, with Mary Hansen 31-38-4, Musser 32-34-4 and Lesch 30-34-4. Bermel had four aces and was 24-of-24, with McCune 25-30-4 and Bice 14-16-3.
The Hawks return to action Thursday in Adel at the A-D-M Invitational.
