The Waukee girls’ swim team captured the Central Iowa Conference Eastern Division championship with a 130-56 win at Southeast Polk on Tuesday.
The Warriors went 1-2 in five events: the 200-yard medley relay (Maddie Gehrke, Tori Bussanmas, Ellie Blazenko, Camryn Somers in 1:56.21 and Ashley Dean, Olivia Crouse, Annie Whitehead, Maddie McCormick in 2:03.70), the 200 freestyle (Jenny Brown in 2:02.88 and Blazenko in 2:05.10), the 500 freestyle (Dean in 5:42.55 and Crouse in 5:45.83), the 100 butterfly (Dean in 1:05.50 and Emma Georgeff in 1:08.10) and the 1-meter diving (Jilian Loos, 209.95, and Maddie Piechowski, 191.95).
Gehrke, Brown, Zoe Bussanmas and Somers won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:42.65 and Blazenko won the 100 backstroke in 1:03.75. Gehrke won the 200 individual medley in 2:16.68 and was edged by Southeast Polk’s Alyssa Fluitt in the 100 freestyle, 52.15 to 52.18. Those times are the fastest in the state this season.
Waukee will head back to Southeast Polk next week for the Central Iowa Conference meet. Diving will be on Oct. 22, with the swimming events to follow on Oct. 24.
