The Van Meter baseball team, which this week ascended to the No. 2 ranking in the Class 1A poll by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association, won seven more games in recent action to improve to 14-1 on the season.

That included an 11-6 victory at Des Moines Hoover on Tuesday, statistics for which were unavailable at press time.


Brandon Brittain homered twice and drove in six to lead the Bulldogs past Guthrie Center 13-0 on Moday.

Brittain is the state leader in home runs through Tuesday with 11, five more than the next closest player. He’s hitting .595 with 35 RBIs and a 1.524 slugging percentage.

Jake Eslick had two hits, two RBIs and scored three runs, Cody Blackwell doubled and drove in two and Ben Flaherty was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.

Zach Prouty won, allowing two hits and six walks over seven innings while striking out eight.


The Bulldogs beat Woodward Academy 21-9 and Madrid 13-2 at a tournament in Madrid on June 8. Brittain homered and drove in four against WA, as the Bulldogs posted an eight-run first. Jake Chevalier had three hits and two RBIs, Jeremy Helmick collected four hits and Blackewell and Kurt Sankey were both 3-for-4. Eslick won, striking out six over four innings.

Brittain, Chevalier and Flaherty all homered and Chevalier drove in four. Prouty pitched four innings, allowing one earned run on one hit for the victory.


Van Meter scored twice in the fifth to edge visiting Woodward-Granger 3-2 on June 7.

Chevalier, Drake Doud and Ben Engstrand drove in runs, and Blackwell struck out five, allowing two unearned runs on six hits for the victory.


Brittain homered and drove in two in the Bulldogs’ 5-1 win over Des Moines Christian on June 6.

He also struck out 10, allowing just three hits for the complete-game victory.

Doud was 2-for-3 with an RBI and both Blackwell and Sankey scored runs.


Brittain homered twice and drove in six as Van Meter pasted Melcher-Dallas 12-1 on June 5.

The Bulldogs scored six in the first and five in the second. Helmick and Eslick also had two-hit games and Prouty struck out eight over three innings of work for the win.
