Despite losing to Saydel 9-8 on June 22 in the second game of the tournament at Saydel, the No. 2 Van Meter baseball team doesn’t seem to be showing any signs of slowing down. The Bulldogs are 4-1 in their last five games.

The Bulldogs had an 8-7 lead after the fifth inning but couldn’t stop Saydel from scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth to get the victory. Brandon Brittain went 1-for-1 with a home run and scored three runs while driving in two RBIs in the game.

Ben Engstrand went 2-for-3 and had two RBIs. Jake Chevalier went 3-for-5 at the plate and had an RBI and a stolen base.

In the first game of the tournament they beat Albia 11-6 after a seven-run seventh inning. Cody Blackwell led the way with a homerun and three RBIs.

Chevalier, Engstrand and Kurt Sankey had two RBIs apiece and Jeremy Helmick had two stolen bases. Blackwell pitched just one inning and picked up the win giving up just one hit and giving up no runs.

On June 20 the Bulldogs dominated Earlham 13-1. Brittain had a big game going 2-for-3 with a home run, three runs scored, four RBIs and two stolen bases.

Chevalier and Drake Doud had two RBIs apiece and Engstrand scored three runs.

The Bulldogs also swept Coon Rapids-Bayard 5-1 and 6-0 in a doubleheader on June 19. Brittain scattered three hits and struck out five in seven innings of work in game one, and both Chevalier and Ben Flaherty drove in two runs apiece.

Chevalier had all four of the Bulldogs’ RBIs in game two while going 3-for-3 at the plate and Helmick went 3-for-4 and scored three runs. Zach Prouty pitched all seven innings for the Bulldogs and allowed only two hits and had six strikeouts en route to the win.
