It was a tight game, but the Waukee girls’ soccer team prevailed over Southeast Polk 1-0 winning the shootout 3-2 over the Rams. With the win, the Warriors are going to the state tournament for the second-straight year.
Waukee (16-3) has been paired up against Johnston (17-3) in the first round of the tournament. Johnston gave the Warriors one of their three losses this season back on May 21 when the Dragons won the game 1-0.
For the Warriors, this is their fourth-straight state tournament appearance. Last season they defeated Linn-Mar in the first round by a score of 3-1 before losing 2-1 in the semifinals to Ankeny, who eventually went on to beat Dowling Catholic in finals and win the state championship.
In 2012, the Warriors defeated Dowling Catholic in the first round by a score of 1-0 and then lost to Ankeny, again, by a score of 2-1 in the semifinals.
In 2011, when Waukee was still in Class 2A, the Warriors defeated Waverly-Shell Rock 2-0 in the first round of the tournament and then defeated Pleasant Valley in the semifinals by a score of 2-1. They went on to lose to Cedar Rapids Xavier in the championship game by a score of 2-1.
The Warriors will begin their state tournament run at the 2014 state tournament on Thursday when they take on Johnston in the first round. The game will begin at 5:15 p.m. on field seven.
If the Warriors win in the first round, they will play in the semifinals on Friday at 5 p.m. on field six and if they should win that game, they will play in the championship on Saturday at 4 p.m. on field nine.
