FORT MADISON — The Iowa State Penitentiary will conduct an open house next month for anyone considering a career in public safety.
Rebecca Bowker, a spokeswoman at the prison, said people will get to see what it’s like to be a correctional officer during an event from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 2 at the ISP.
"During this unique event, guests will get in-depth information about the varied duties of a correctional officer," she said Tuesday. "They will likely find out that it is challenging and rewarding to work with incarcerated individuals every day. They will speak to current staff that will give firsthand accounts of their work day."
In addition, attendees will speak to Human Resources about pay and benefits, she added. Finally, guests will be able to tour the facility to see the environment first hand.
"This opportunity is easy to participate and those interested need to simply call (319) 376-4842 to be placed on the list," Bowker said. "There are a few qualifications; all participants must have their high school diploma or equivalent and be able to pass a background check."
Bowker said the deadline to be placed on the list is Sept. 25. Persons interested in more information may call (319) 376-4842 today for additional details, she said.
