This past Saturday, The Friends of the Adel Public Library Foundation hosted their annual For the Love of Soup Event. Each year, the foundation hosts a variety of activities in order to assist the library in obtaining resources beyond their budget. For the Love of Soup is just one of these events.
Volunteers cooked their favorite traditional recipes, ranging from spaghetti and meatball soup to corn and potato chowder. These soups were then judged by The Friends of the Adel Public Library Foundation President Teresa Wichtendahl, Adel City Council Member Shirley McAdon and Board of Trustee Member Dianne Fredin on taste, texture and appearance with a certificate awarded to the winner of each category.
Attendees also voted on their favorite soups with the winner presented with a People’s Choice Award Plaque.
“Every year, I try and find something different, usually with a unique twist. I’m a huge fan of Paula and the team. I think they are doing an amazing job,” Former Board Member and three-time winner Sonya Ferguson said.
This year’s winners included Ty Kirk for best taste with his Italian Sausage Tortillini Soup, Dr. Patricia Tice for best appearance with her Cheesy Vegetable Soup, Sonya Ferguson for best texture with her smoked chicken and wild rice soup, and Lori Tabbert for the people’s choice award.
Proceeds from the event go towards supporting upcoming programs, such as the library’s summer reading program, acquisitions and new materials.
