Verlyn L. Westra died Tuesday, August 7, 2018.
He was born February 17, 1936 in Larchwood, Iowa to Cornelius and Ethel Westra. He grew up in Inwood, Iowa, and went on to study at the University of South Dakota where he earned a degree in Business Administration. He was a member of the Naval Reserve.
While attending USD, Verlyn met Sheila Klotz of Howard, South Dakota. They married in November, 1960, and moved to Burlington, Iowa, to begin a family, and started working at Murray Iron Works as an accountant.
In 1974 they moved to Lincoln, Nebraska where Verlyn, along with two business partners, purchased Nebraska Boiler Company. As treasurer, Verlyn enjoyed a successful career, expanding the company to National Dynamics Corporation, which included Lincoln Manufacturing, Nebraska Boiler Company, C. P. Coal Mills, and Gonzales Manufacturing in Gonzales, Texas. The three partners later retired and sold National Dynamics to Cleaver Brooks.
Verlyn is survived by his seven children, John (Heather) of Baton Rouge, LA; Daniel (Mary Beth) of Kansas City, MO; Koni (Robert) Barie of Lincoln; David (Sandy) of Kansas City, MO; Cara (Kurt) Matthes of Lincoln; Eric of Omaha; and Nicholas of Lincoln; and his thirteen grandchildren in whose glimmering personalities his spirit will shine on indefinitely. Verlyn is also survived by his brother Roland Ordell Westra of Rockford, IL; sisters Delores Schlotfeldt of South Bend, IN; Twyla Kroger of Alcester, SD; and Betty Herreid of Worthington, MN; sisters-in-law Kathy (Reg) Callies of Longville, MN; and Deb (Randy) Haas of Sioux Falls, SD.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Sheila; his parents; sister Darlin; son, Bradley James; sister-in-law, LaVonne Westra; brothers-in-law, Gale Schlotfeldt; Glenn Kroger; Charlie Herreid; and Jon Klotz.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, August 13, 2018, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 1940 South 77th Street. Father Michael McCabe and Father James Meysenberg will concelebrate the Mass.
Rosary will be held at 7:00 PM on Sunday at church.
Visitation will be on Sunday from 12 noon to 5 PM at Butherus Maser and Love Funeral Home, 4040 A St, Lincoln. Visitation will resume at 6:30 pm Sunday at church.
Memorials to Matt Talbot Kitchen and Outreach in lieu of flowers.
