Louise Margaret Schemmel, 88, formerly of Dexter, passed away on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at Ramsey Village in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 23 at Zion Lutheran Church in Dexter. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church. Louise was born on October 5, 1930 to John and Elsie (Zorn) Sohl in Doon, Iowa. She grew up in Doon and attended Doon High School. While in school she was very active in 4-H. When she was 13 she met the love of her life Donald Schemmel. Don’s uncle was a neighbor to Louise’s parents. The couple was united in marriage on January 11, 1950 at Hull, Iowa. To this union three boys were born: Bill, Bob and Roger. The couple made their home in Colorado, then returned to Northwest Iowa to farm and lastly retired to Dexter. Louise worked at the Good Samaritan Home in George before working at the High School in George as the Food Service Director. She later worked as the Food Service Director at the Stuart and Waukee High Schools.
Louise was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Dexter, Order of the Eastern Star and was on a bowling team that made it to the state tournament. Louise enjoyed sewing and quilting, gardening, cooking, baking and square dancing with Donald. Most of all she cherished time she was able to spend with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Arnold Sohl and Dwayne Sohl; sister-in-law, Wilma and husband, John L. Grier.
Louise leaves behind her loving husband of 69 years, Donald; sons: Bill (Mary) Schemmel of Des Moines, Bob (Deb) Schemmel of Dexter and Roger (Linda) Schemmel of West Des Moines; grandchildren: Heather (Greg) Sweeney, Lisa (Scott) Estes, Allison (Jared) Hoyt, Susanne Schemmel, Lloyd Schemmel and Ben (Cassidy) Schemmel; great-grandchildren: Owen Sweeney, Caleb Sweeney, Michael Estes, Conner Hoyt, Jackson Hoyt, Mason Hoyt, Sullivan Schemmel and Silas Schemmel; sister-in-law, Betty Sohl; and a host of extended family and friends that will miss her dearly.
