Robert (Bob) James Richards

Robert (Bob) James Richards passed away peacefully in his home on November 20 at the age of 85. Bob was born June 22, 1936 in Muscatine, IA to Reed and Muriel Richards. After graduating from Webster City High School in 1954, Bob enlisted in the US Marine Corps. He was joined in marriage on March 21, 1958 to Geraldine (Geri) Ford. They lived in the Ames area while Bob attended Iowa State University and eventually settled in Van Meter, Iowa where they have lived for over 60 years.

Bob loved to be outside moving dirt, watering trees and enjoying a good bonfire. He was constantly coming up with new projects for the yard and adorning it with lawn art. His favorite sanctuary was sitting in an Adirondack chair by one of the many trees he planted. When he was indoors, he could be found surrounded by a number of new books & magazines while enjoying Iowa Public Television or listening to a Bill Gaither video. His love of music was passed on to his two daughters, Kim Fankhauser (Gary Smith) and Leslie (Joe) Herman. One of his greatest joys was becoming a grandfather. He made sure his home was scattered with pictures of Lydia (Matt) Ponder, Julia Herman, Maya Herman and Jameson Herman.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother William E. Richards, and is survived by his sister Lois A. Richards.

A private service will be held in the spring at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, IA. Memorials can be directed to Iowa Public Television.
