Occasionally the Dallas County Health Department receives an email or call asking about being tested for a disease or health concern. This lab work is not a service offered by Dallas County, but residents are encouraged to go to Polk County Health at 1907 Carpenter in Des Moines instead.
The Polk County clinic can test for pregnancy, tuberculosis (TB), sexually transmitted diseases, HIV, cervical cancer (with a PAP test) and lead poisoning in children.
The Polk County Health Department allows walk-ins for some services and requires an appointment for others. Call them at 515-286-3798 to ask questions or schedule an appointment.
In some cases, you will be advised to bring along insurance information and/or payment. For most testing, the charge may be between $15 and $25. If you believe you have been exposed to a communicable disease, please don’t let the cost keep you from being tested. The clinic will be able to work with you – your health and the health of others in contact with you is the important thing. Lead poisoning testing in children is free.
