I just listened to the first book of an entertaining mystery series by Jacqueline Winspear. Better yet, after finishing "Maisie Dobbs", I discovered there are currently ten books in the series and Winspear is working on number eleven! I can hardly wait to start "Birds of a Feather", the second novel in the series. Maisie Dobbs, the daughter of a struggling greengrocer, was sent to work as a maid when she was only 13. Her new employer, the wealthy Lady Rowan, recognizes and appreciates Maisie’s innate curiosity and love of learning and willingly funds her education. After studying at Cambridge, Dobbs serves as a nurse on the Front during the Great War. Now, in the spring of 1929, Maisie has just opened her own detective agency. Her first assignment, a seemingly simple infidelity case, proves to be a deeper and darker mystery that forces her to confront her own war memories.
Fresh, interesting, and absorbing, this novel has great character development and historical accuracy. The downloadable audio version is available from Waukee Public Library. Book discussion groups will enjoy the Reader’s Guide at the end of the book.
