Doubles teams from Fort Madison High School and Notre Dame-West Burlington won berths in the state Class 1A girls tennis tournament by virtue of their top two finishes in the regional tournament at Fairfield on Wednesday.

Fort Madison's Katie Larson and Miko Shirai defeated ND-WB's Lydia Becker and Claire Hackenmiller, 6-2, 6-1, in the regional championship match. Both teams advance to the state tournament May 30-31 at Byrnes Park in Waterloo.

Larson and Shirai opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Davis County's Avery Thompson and Isabella Tranquillino. They defeated Notre Dame-West Burlington's Riley Brueck and McKenzie Fry, 6-3, 6-1, in the quarterfinals, and topped Keokuk's Jakala Hall and Daniela Lozano, 6-4, 6-2, in the semifinals.

Becker and Hackenmiller won their first round match, 6-0, 6-0, over Keokuk's Keleigh Hall and Maddi Miller. They topped Fort Madison's Larissa Ferrill and Kearstyn Johnson, 6-3, 6-2, in the quarterfinals and ousted Davenport Assumption's Caroline Bush and Sydney Johnson, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, in the semifinals.

Host Fairfield claimed both singles state berths with Yana Gaskell defeating fellow Trojan Anatta Charoenkul, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, in the regional finals.

Fort Madison's Mercedee Doty and Lanie Kuntz and Keokuk's Hayle Broadwell each won first-round singles matches.

GRAYHOUNDS OUSTED: Burlington High School's Emily Bloomer won a first round singles match and the Grayhounds' doubles team of Grace Breuer and Mallory Pohren won a first round doubles match, but they advanced no farther in the Class 2A girls tennis regional at Iowa City.

Bloomer defeated Ottumwa's Daniela Zeledon, 6-4, 6-2, in the first round, then fell to top-seeded Bithotza James-Lejarcequi of Iowa City High, 6-0, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. Iowa City West's Jessica Moonjely defeated James-Lejarcequi in the finals and both advance to the state tournament May 30-31 at the University of Iowa in Iowa City.

Burlington's Rachel Mason lost her first round singles match.

In doubles, Breuer and Pohren defeated Iowa City High's Liza Whaylen and Jameson Reinecke, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, in the first round, then lost to Muscatine's Acacia Brown and Sarah Jacobs, 6-3, 6-2, in the quarterfinals. In the finals, Iowa City West's Emma Koch and and Audrey Koch defeated Cedar Rapids Jefferson's Maddie Slagle and Emma Lassen, 6-2, 6-1. Both teams advance.

Burlington's Hallie Todd and Peighton Davis lost their first round doubles match.


ARTMAN ADVANCES IN 4 EVENTS: Illini West High School's Connor Artman qualified for the Class 1A Illinois state boys track and field meet with four victories in the sectional meet at Rushville, Illinois.

Artman won the long jump with a leap of 22 feet, 11 inches, the triple jump in 43-6, the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.83 seconds and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 39.37.

Illini West's Jacob Bryan advances in two events, winning the 800-meter run in 2:01.75 and finishing second in the 400 with a time of 51.84. The Chargers' Colton Sargeant advances to state in the 100-meter dash after being clocked in 11.36 seconds, good for sixth place in the sectional.

West Hancock's Andy Bird and Trentin Rooney qualified for the state meet in two events each. Bird won the shot put with a toss of 55 feet, six inches, and he finished second in discus at 158 feet, three inches. Rooney finished fifth in the 100 with a time of 11.33 seconds and he was fifth in the 200 at 22.87 seconds.

West Hancock's Dalton Ellingboe took second in the 3,200-meter run in 10:10.84 and advances to the state meet.

Pleasant Plains won the sectional team title with 128.33 points and host Rushville-Industry was second at 95. Illini West took third with 81 points and West Hancock was fifth at 46.33. Fifteen teams scored points.


WEST HANCOCK 14, QUINCY NOTRE DAME 4: Megan Fox, Reagan Eaves and Liz Walker each banged out three hits to lead the Titans to victory over Notre Dame at Quincy, Illinois.

Eaves had three RBIs. Collecting two hits each for West Hancock were Erynn Gerhardt, Audrey Bryant and Chloe West. Bryant doubled. Fox was the winning pitcher, giving up three runs on six hits and three walks in three and two-thirds innings. She struck out three.

Kaley Wall, Carolyn Dickerman and Madison Gilligan each had two hits for Quincy Notre Dame. Lexi Schaffer was the losing pitcher.

PEORIA CHRISTIAN 1, WEST CENTRAL 0: Peoria Christian's Abbi Taylor fired a four-hit shutout and ousted West Central in the first round of the South Fulton regional tournament.

Taylor walked none and struck out nine in seven innings.


PRY'S 84 PACES SCC: Southeastern Community College's Emma Pry carded a second straight 84 and is tied for 29th place after the third round of the National Junior College Athletic Association women's golf tournament at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Arizona.

Pry has a 54-hole total of 246 strokes. The final round is slated for today.

SCC's Morgan Totsch is tied for 66th after carding a 91 on Wednesday. She's at 269 strokes for the tournament. SCC's Frankie Johnson shot a third round of 98 and her 306 total ties her for 101st.

Des Moines Area Community College's Kortney Orr, a Columbus High School graduate, is tied for 62nd after carding a 92. Her three-day total is 268.

Daytona State College's Jiwon Jeon is the individual leader with a third round of 3-under par 69 and a 212 total. She edged past teammate Grace St-Germain, the leader after the first two rounds, who shot par Wednesday and is at 213.

Defending national champion Daytona State remains the team leader with 865 strokes. Seminole State is second at 898. Iowa Western is in 11th with 1,034 strokes and DMACC is 17th at 1,101.
