Excitement brims on the horizon on the hardwood as another exciting season of Dallas Center-Grimes volleyball is about to begin.

The Fillies, who went 27-8 last year with a nearly unblemished 10-1 conference record, are back in action and ready with over 12 athletes currently on the roster. In one of may positive aspects about the 2018-19 Filly team, the bulk of the starting roster is made up of upperclassmen including five seniors and three seniors.

Most of the athletes are returning from a solid 2017-18 season in which the Fillies were first in the Little Hawkeye Conference in total blocks with 142 while also second in the conference in assists with 311. Blocks leader Abby Greiman returns for her senior campaign while Dakota Miles, who was second on the team in assists, returns as well. The Fillies were strong in the kills department last season and ranked second in the Little Hawkeye Conference with 325. The highlight of the kills department for Dallas Center-Grimes last season was Katelyn Knudsen who returns for her junior stint after posting 222 kills last year, fifth best individually inside the conference.

What brings even more excitement to Dallas Center-Grimes head volleyball coach Cheryl Voelker, is the strong bond that returns alongside the athletic stars.

“This team is a very strong group with a lot of team chemistry,” began Voelker. “The motto this year is we own it and during the summer I’ve let them show me if they really do want to own it. They’ve shown up at every camp, every scrimmage, all without me instigating them and that showed a lot of ownership. That’s really shown in practices as well with a lot of communication and in any sport, let alone volleyball, strong communication can be the key between winning and losing.”

Another thing that has coach Voelker eagerly awaiting the season is the addition of depth to the team, something that she mentioned as lacking in recent years.

“One thing we have this year that we haven’t had much in the past is depth,” started Voelker. “There are some pretty big shoes to fill but we have enough girls hungry for varsity playing time that will step up and help out the team.”

Coach Voelker and the Fillies will begin their season run with the Filly Invitational on Tuesday, August 21 at 4:30 p.m. followed by the Grinnell Invitational on Saturday, August 25 beginning at 9 a.m., all before entertaining their first conference match up against Newton on Tuesday, August 28 at 7:15 p.m.
