The Woodward-Granger volleyball team started out their season 1-0 with a win over West Central Valley on Thursday, Aug. 23. The Hawks made short work of their opponents by defeating them in the first and only three sets.
Set number one ended with a 25-8 score with the team coming out confident in their abilities. As the Hawks went into their second set the momentum was lost, but not without the team rallying together to bring back another victory to the bench.
Junior Emma Drake was one of the many to contribute hugely to her teams success as many saw in her hustle towards the ball throughout all three sets.
Drake says she believes the mentality and teamwork that comes with a player’s attitude is very important when it comes to winning.
“I think it (attitude) is everything because if you’re down then you can’t score points and you can’t really do anything,” Drake said. “So you’ve got to get everyone pumped up and ready to win.”
That is exactly what happened in the second set. After rallying together and bringing that pumped up energy to each other, W-G defeated their opponent again 25-20.
Head Coach Bailey Hunt says she could tell the difference in her team’s mindset when it came to the second set.
“We started getting in our own heads about hitting it out of bounds and I could tell they were just really worried about it which made them make more errors,” Coach Hunt said. “So we talked about it and they changed their mindset and during that third set they were able to shut it down.”
W-G ended the game with another sweeping victory over West Central Valley by coming out of the third set 25-9.
The Hawks will travel to Bondurant-Farrar on Saturday, Aug. 25 for a tournament against various opponents.
