It was due or die time for the sixth ranked Mustang, and the third ranked Fillie cross country teams at the state qualifying meet held at the Central College cross country course in Pella Thursday afternoon.

In a pressure packed day, both teams came away with their tickets punched to the 2018 state cross country meet. Under sunny skies, the Fillies bested the entire eleven team field, placing first with the help of five top twenty finishers and an average team time of 20:27. The Fillies claimed the state qualifying title by a mere one point over second place Pella.

Megan Sterbenz put up one of her best times of the year placing fourth with a time of 19:44. That was followed up by the freshman/sophomore duo of Hannah Little and Emma Angus who placed eighth and ninth respectively with times of 20:17 and 20:19 respectively. Junior Lara Kallem placed just outside the individual qualifying mark with a 16th place finish, and a time of 20:53. Miranda Muhlstein, Nicole Merical, and Natalie Paulson rounded out the scoring for the Fillies placing 17th, 26th, and 33rd respectively.

The Mustang cross country team took home a third place team finish with the help of three top twenty finishes and a team time of 1:28:43. Junior Bradley Ramsey put up a performance to remember as he led the Mustangs with a seventh place finish and a time of 17:24. Tyler Borneman claimed a ninth place finish with a time of 17:30 while Brock Wolf earned a 16th place finish thanks to a time of 17:44. Mustangs inside the top 25 included Jacob Storey in 21st (17:57) and Aidan Ramsey in 23rd (18:08).

Both teams will now be taking on the state meet held at the Fort Dodge Municipal Golf Course which will take place on Saturday, October 27. The girls’ race will begin at noon with the boys race to follow at 12:30 p.m.
