In a meet of possible big implications, the Waukee wrestling team traveled to Fort Dodge Thursday night to battle Fort Dodge High School.
While it was a simple one-on-one dual meet, a lot was on the line for the third ranked Warrior graplers as they were looking to move up in the rankings.
“This match has implications for state duals because you can get rated and ranked by all the coaches in Class 3A,” began head coach Chad Vollmecke before the meet. “We beat number five West Des Moines Valley, and then Fort Dodge beat Valley, so if we beat Fort Dodge then we probably stay where we’re at which is a big deal going into regional duals. That decides on who hosts, where we go, who we wrestle, and ultimately where we get seeded if we make it to state duals.”
Unfortunately for Waukee, they could not pull out the win they were hoping for as they fell to Fort Dodge Thursday by a narrow 33-35 margin. The Warriors did manage to capture six wins on the night. Top ranked 170 pound Class 3A wrestler Anthony Zach avenged just his second loss of the season over the weekend with a pin-fall win over Kaden Smith at the 2:35 mark. Zach’s win by fall was the only win by pin-fall on the night for the Warriors.
Griffin Gammell at 182 pounds bested the likes of Austin Lee by 7-3 decision, the fourth time of the season Gammell has earned a victory by decision. He was one of three Warriors to earn a decision win alongside Jermaine Sammler with a mark of 5-1 over Kody Cook. The third decision victory on the night came from Connor Arndt at 285 pounds and did so by way of 3-1 decision.
Mason Seifried, who just came off of a 6-0 sweep over the weekend, kept up his winning ways Thursday with a 10-2 major decision win, his 23 overall win of the season up to this point.
Next up on the docket for the Warriors will be more weekend action at the Freeman-Castro Shootout in Bettendorf Iowa. It will be another two day encounter beginning on Friday, January 11.
