It was conference meet time for the Dallas Center-Grimes wrestling team as they battled the rest of the Little Hawkeye Conference at Grinnell High School Saturday, Jan. 26.
Against the likes of the seven team conference, the Mustangs placed fifth with a mark of 148 team points. Norwalk would end up taking the conference title while Indianola, Newton, and Grinnell rounded out the rest of the top five.
In all, the Mustangs had ten wrestlers earn top five finishes on the day. That included a highlighted first place finish from Brayden Broderick at 132 pounds. Broderick earned 22 points for the team by sweeping through his final three matches. Broderick bested Grinnell’s Landon Kirby by pin-fall late at the 4:56 mark which then turned into a sudden victory over Norwalk’s Landon Card for the title.
A second place finish and 18 team points came from the likes of fellow Broderick, Bain Broderick at 152 pounds. After receiving a quarterfinal round bye, Broderick made quick work of Newton’s Zane Kohlmeyer in the semi-final round by pin-fall in 42 seconds worth of action. That led to the first place match where Broderick suffered his ninth loss of the season to Norwalk’s Carter Schmidt by tech fall. Zach Needham, Class 3A’s seventh ranked 170 pound wrestler also took second place on the day and earning 18 team points. After a quarterfinal bye put Needham into the semi-final match, he bested Grinnell’s Bronson Alter by pin-fall (3:11) to enter into the first place match against Indianola’s Brennan Meacham. Unfortunately, Needham could not pull out a third victory as he fell by 7-3 decision to earn a second place finish.
While there wasn’t a third place finish had by the Mustangs, DC-G did pick up five fourth place finishes. Brock Renshaw at 106 pounds picked up two wins in four matches to help with 12 team points while Kieran Shawhan matched that point total while also placing fourth in the 113 pound weight class. Gavin Moran at 138 pounds picked up ten team points with his fourth place finish while Cole Smith at 145 pound earned 11 team points in a fourth place finish as well.
