The ADM Tiger wrestling team took to weekend action Saturday as they battled in the Class 2A section 1 meet.
The Tigers picked up 146.5 team points in their fourth place team finish highlighted by a pair of individual first place finishes and ten total top five finishes. The two first place finishes came from Andrew Flora at 126 pounds and Nolan Harsh at 182 pounds.
Flora, Class 2A’s top ranked 126 pound wrestler, had another flawless outing en route to an overall record of 35-0. Flora bested Ballard’s Timothy Lang in the semi-final round while issuing his 13th pin-fall win of the season in the first place match. It was another strong performance by the senior including the first place match which he talked about following his performance Saturday.
“I was just trying to get into a groove all match long, it’s all about building yourself up every match and I felt I did that here today,” said Flora.
Building himself up has been Flora’s main focus ever since his bid for the 113 pound championship last season. Flora has maintained his passionate pursuit of perfection and felt like that took another step Saturday.
“My biggest thing I’ve wanted to improve on all season was getting out on bottom,” began Flora. “At conference I had a period where I got rode out for the first time in awhile and that made me work harder this week. I made sure to explode out from bottom and really held the mindset not to be held down. I also made sure to pick my shots on offense which was big and helped me with a pretty good day today.”
Nolan Harsh brought his win total up to 35 on the season by earning three straight wins Saturday. A first round bye in the quarter-final round transformed into a commanding 16-0 tech fall win in the semi-final round. Earning his 25th win by pin-fall, Flora took home 23.5 team points and a first place finish over Woodward-Granger’s Kade Pollich (1:10).
There was a trio of second place finishes including Kaden Sutton at 220 pounds. Sutton breezed through his first two matches via a first round bye and a 14-6 major decision win over Tyler Erdman of Van Meter/Earlham in the semi-final round. That led the eighth ranked 220 pound wrestler to enter a top ten match-up against top ranked Cody Fisher of Woodward-Granger in the title match. It was a closely contested contest but in the end, Sutton suffered defeat by a slim 3-0 decision. From there, Sutton took on a second place match where he redeemed himself with a second victory over Tyler Erdman of Van Meter/Earlham, this time by Rule.
Justice Paulson at 195 pounds also placed second and gave ADM 18 team points. The only loss for Paulson came in the first place match against Ballard’s Joseph Bofbauer by fall (1:39). Paulson then came back and bested Dominick Kirkpatrick of Saydel for the second place team finish. Broderick Schmidt had quite the wild ride which began with a wild pin-fall win in the quarterfinal round over Joseph Jordan of Ballard at the 3:23 mark. After Van Meter/Earlhams’ Bryce Cole took a 9-4 decision win over Schmidt, the elder statesman won his third place match due a disqualification of North Polk’s Logan Engebreston. That set up Schmidt to take on Austin Pyles of Saydel in the second place match. The slate of performances earned 21 team points for the day.
Other top five performances included Cooper Greenslade at 106 pounds taking a fifth place finish, Cole Williamson at 120 pounds with a fifth place finish, Hogan Hopewell at 132 pounds with a fifth place finish, Kolton Benz earning a fourth place finish at 138 pounds, and Eli Jones at 170 pounds with a fifth place finish.
