Some late game heroics from the free throw line helped the ADM boys’ basketball team claim victory Monday night in a 62-61 round one victory in the Class 3A Sub-state 7 bracket.

It was a rematch against North Polk High School at Gilbert where the Tigers were looking to recreate their 18 point victory over the Comets that occurred in the first meeting. The contest was quite back and forth with 12 lead changes throughout and neither team had much of a lead all night. The Tigers needed all of their strong start which included a 20 point first quarter, far exceeding their first quarter scoring average of 13.8 points. The 20-14 first quarter lead produced by ADM fell to three points in the second quarter, however the Tigers still took to the halftime break up 33-30. ADM found themselves in rare deficit come the end of the third quarter, down 46-45 which went back and forth all fourth quarter long. That’s when the heroics took place as sophomore star Nate Mueller sunk two crucial free throws with under ten seconds to play which eventually led to the game win.

Mueller did far more than connect on clutch free throws, he went a perfect eight-for-eight from the charity stripe all together while posting a team leading 20 total points on the night. Mueller shot exactly 50 percent (five-of-ten) from field goal range with two made three point shots added in. Mueller also added in three rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Even though North Polk stole the show from the three point line with ten total made three point shots, ADM’s Jaxson Millsap shown brightly from beyond the arc with four of ADM’s six made three point shots. That helped the junior to 19 total points on the night, one of his highest single game scoring marks of the season. Millsap connected on six-of-ten field goal shots.

With the help of a missed last second shot attempt by North Polk, ADM skated by with their 13th victory of the season and the right to move on to face Gilbert Thursday night. The Tigers squared match up will take place from Gilbert High School beginning at 7 p.m.
