Despite it seeming like the dead of winter outside, there are plenty of former area track and field stars shining on the indoor collegiate track scene at Central College.

This year, the Central College men’s track and field team wields two former ADM stars and one former Waukee student athlete. The two former Tigers are Rylan Heffernan and Taylor Smith. Heffernan, a well known distance runner in high school is continuing his distance journey at Central College where he has posted indoor best times of 1:28.19 in the 600 meter run, 2:03.13 in the 800 meter run, and 4:48.14 in the mile run event. Taylor Smith resides on the other end of the spectrum in the sprinting division. Smith has earned one varsity letter while posting career indoor bests in the 60 meters (7.73 seconds), 200 meters (25.22 seconds), and the 300 meters (41.89 seconds). With his time at Central College, Smith has also posted outdoor bests of 12.23 seconds in the 100 meters, 24.81 seconds in the 200 meters, and 59.85 seconds in the 400 meters.

As for the former Waukee star, Central College sophomore Nate Sanders recently picked up his first letter honor. As the Dutch currently continue on with the indoor season, Sanders has picked up career best of 2:10.65 in the 800 meters, 2:43.49 in the 1,000 meters, 4:35.84 in the mile, 9:10.17 in the 3,000 meters, and 15:51.88 in the 5,000 meters. With the outdoor season soon approaching, Sanders will look to best his current outdoor times of 2:06.51 in the 800 meters, 4:16.05 in the 1500 meters, 15:53.86 in the 5,000 meters, and 34:15.55 in the 10,000 meters.

The next indoor meet of the season for all three and the rest of the Central College track team will start on Friday, Feb. 22 with the American Rivers Conference indoor championships in Waverly Iowa.
