Two Dallas County News area teams are about to grace the state tournament stage which will begin today. The two area teams in mention involve the Van Meter Bulldogs and the Waukee Warriors.

Both teams have advanced to the state tournament after claiming sub-state final victories. The Bulldogs captured their third straight state tournament appearance with a 48-46 win over Pella Christian while the Warriors punched their third ticket to the state tournament in five years with a 45-38 win over Des Moines Hoover. Van Meter resides within the Class 2A ranks and comes in as the fourth seed at 21-2 while Waukee comes in as Class 4A’s top ranked team in the tournament at 20-2.

It will be Van Meter who will start things off as they will entertain the night cap of the Class 2A round one slate of games with a battle against Dike-New Hartford. The contest will begin tonight at 8:15 p.m with the winner set to take on the victor between top seeded North Linn and eight seeded Des Moines Christian on Wednesday, Mar. 6. The Bulldogs come into this match up as the elder statesman with three straight state tournament appearances compared to Dike-New Hartford who hasn’t graced the state tournament state since the 2015-16 campaign. It’s Dike-New Hartford’s third overall state tournament appearance compared to Van Meter’s fourth state tournament appearance.

For the Waukee Warriors, they will embark upon their ninth state tournament appearance and they come in as the top seeded Class 4A squad, the first time in school history. They will be taking on a familiar foe in Dowling Catholic for their first round match-up on Wednesday, Mar. 6 beginning at 10:30 a.m. This will be the first time these two schools have faced off against each other in a state tournament setting. Waukee currently holds a five game winning streak over Dowling as the Maroons have not defeated the Warriors since the 2015-16 campaign. Waukee took the win in their only prior meeting this season by a 72-47 margin. Should the Warriors best the Maroons, they would then advance to the semi-final round on Thursday, Mar 7 against the winner of Iowa City West and Dubuque Senior.
