Five first half goals were more than enough for Class 3A’s top-ranked Waukee Warriors to post their second straight win of the season over Council Bluffs Lincoln 6-0.
It was a game where mother nature favored those heading east thanks to strong, chilly winds within the confines of Waukee Stadium in Waukee. Five separate players contributed to the scoring cause with one individual touching up two goals.
The scoring frenzy began in the first ten minutes of action as Niko Madrigal punched in the game’s first goal of the day and his first goal of the season in the ninth minute of action. Junior Edi Cokovic had quite the day, matching his two assists in the season opener with a pair of goals Saturday afternoon. Cokovic began his scoring day just three minutes after Waukee’s first goal with the help of a Justin Crawmer assist to capture his first goal of the season and put Waukee up 2-0 early.
After a penalty just outside the ten-yard box, senior Colton Lennon picked up his first goal of the season on a penalty kick to increase the Warrior lead 3-0 with just 19 minutes gone by. CJ Coppola was introduced to the varsity scene in strong fashion as he collected his first varsity goal in the 26th minute of action, courtesy of a Jules Hutchinson assist. The final goal of the first half came in the final minutes as Cokovic collected the final of the pair of goals scored on the day in the 36th minute. That marked one of three unassisted goals for the Warriors on the season.
The Warriors took to the halftime break with an unblemished lead, something they did nearly a third of the season last season.
Finally, from a combination assist from Colton Lennon and CJ Coppola, junior Jackson Keeler delivered his first goal of the season in the 70th minutes of action.
From a defensive standpoint, returning All-State goalkeeper Wesley Sanders did not allow a single goal all game long. The newly minted 20-0 Warriors will remain home for their next round of action as they take on Dowling Catholic Thursday, April 4.
