Appropiately named the Summer Breeze Run, the city of Clive hosted 5k and 10k run Saturday, Aug. 3 in a “Battle of the Burbs” between Clive, Waukee and Des Moines. With the goal to raise community activity and fitness, the three suburbs combined for over 300 registered runners and other surrounding areas nearly doubled the total.
With 116 participants, Clive won the championship belt. West Des Moines also cracked triple digit representation and Waukee brought in 80 runners to place third among the three competing cities but held a number of top placements on the course.
In the 5k event, the first four runners to cross the finish came from non-competing areas including Miles Sheppard of Warsaw blazing the path at 16 minutes 10.5 seconds for first place overall and in the 19 and under division. Also competing in the youngest category, Christopher Pierson clocked in at 19:41.3 for the fastest time by more than two minutes among the battling burbs.
Incomiung Waukee freshman Emma Baumgart was also present in the 19 and under category. She was the second female to break through the tape, registering a time of 24:13.5. That was more than three minutes faster than what she ran at the Live Healthy Iowa 5k in 2016.
Overall in the top 50, Waukee boasted seven top 50 results in the 5k bracket. In the 10k run, four of Waukee’s nine participants placed in the top 25 among only 42 runners. Clive and West Des Moines featured the same success rate.
Waukee held further bragging rights with the first place finish from Bruce Huckfeldt in the 20-39 category. His time of 40:09.7 was more than two minutes faster than the next time while fellow Waukee runner Whitney Noe, pushing a stroller, was the first female, clocking in at 46:01.00.
After finishing, runners were treated to free drinks and a number of food vendors and trucks. Kids were also encouraged to run in a fun run event to help encourage further activity.
