In a large 22 team field Saturday in Cedar Rapids, the Waukee boys cross country team captured a fifth place finish at the Cedar Rapids Prairie Invitational.
It was quite the way to not only kick off the 2019 season, but to wrap up the month of August as five Warrior runners clocked in top 50 times. The Warriors averaged a team time of 17:42.1 and scored 161 points preceded only by Western Dubuque in fourth, Iowa City West in third, Cedar Falls in second, and host Cedar Rapids Prairie taking the meet crown in first.
Pacing the way for the youthful Warriors was sophomore standout Kyle Ruby who averaged 5:25 per mile and finished fourth out of 204 runners with an overall time of 16:49.6. It was an underclassmen led meet for Waukee as fellow sophomore David Parks placed 32nd thanks to a total time of 17:49.8. All but one runner for Waukee averaged under six minutes per mile including senior Jacob Holtz who placed 40th overall with a time of 17:56.7 and averaged 5:47 per mile.
The rest of the Warrior list included juniors including Jacob Christiensen who clocked in a 42nd place time of 17:57.3 which was followed closely by junior Nathan Holstrom who also clocked in a time of 17:57.3 for 43rd place overall. Following those two individuals were Vincent Hodges in 53rd (18:08.9), and Corbin Truitt rounding out the top 60 place winners finishing 61st with a time of 18:17.2. Other notable times for the Warriors included Jonah Christensen with a time of 18:31.2 and Riley Dejohn with a time of 19:31.3.
Next up on the docket for the Warriors will be a trip to the Iowa State University course up in Ames for a twelve team invitational. The field includes host Ames, Ankeny Centennial, Ankeny, Cedar Falls, Des Moines Hoover, Des Moines Roosevelt, Grinnell, Marshalltown, Southeast Polk, Valley, and Waterloo West. The meet will commence from Ames at 4 p.m. Thursday, September 5.
