At long last, the wait is over for the ADM girls’ and boys’ cross country teams as they hit the competitive scene today in Urbandale.
Both Tiger squads will battle four-team fields including Class 4A ninth-ranked Dowling Catholic, Des Moines Hoover, Urbandale, and Indianola. The time has finally come and it’s been a lot of productive practices leading up the season opener as noted by head coach David Zwank.
“We have a really good atmosphere I think,” began Zwank. “Everybody is putting in the work we ask of them. We preach the idea to “train the right way, at the right time, for the right reason. I think our veterans believe in our design and they help the newcomers to understand what and how we are trying to help each of them find their best. This is our design to follow a process like you hear referred to repeatedly at other levels and programs.”
Both Tiger teams will take to Urbandale Middle School for a battle on a lighter course, perfect for the first outing of the season. Even with that said it will have some challenges as noted by coach Zwank.
“The course this weekend is not the most challenging one the kids run on but I do think it is deceptively harder than some people might think,” said Zwank. “The kids see some of the same ground multiple times and that can be challenging for some runners. Everyone is a little different that way for sure.”
The Tigers kick off the season beginning at 9:45 a.m.
