It was an even further drive for the Van Meter/Earlham wrestling team Tuesday night as they traveled to Atlantic High School for a regional dual battle. The Bulldogs were battling it out with Humboldt and despite a tightly contested match-up, Van Meter/Earlham ended up falling by a 45-30 final.
The makeup of the night for the Bulldogs included six victories coming by various means. There were two pinfall victories for the Bulldogs which included Derrin Sesker (185-pounds) and Tyler Haynes (145-pounds). Class 2A’s fourth-ranked 285-pound wrestler brought his pinfall total closer to 20 on the year with a 1:31 victory over Josh Beldin. For Haynes, his win marked the 18th pinfall win of the season and he did so early in the second period (3:20).
From there, no one wrestler replicated the results of the others. Colby Wiederholt flexed his muscles as the seventh-ranked 126-pound wrestler and used an early first-period point buffer to cruise to a 12-2 major decision. At 152-pounds, Bryce Cole went to work and used a late push to walk away with his 29th overall win of the season with a 7-2 decision. Caleb Swalla (170-pounds) picked up his fourth tech-fall victory of the season followed by Gavin Goodrich (195-pounds) who’s victory for the night came by forfeit.
Overall, the loss for the Bulldogs drops their 2019-20 dual meet record to 20-6 on the season.
Next up on the docket for Van Meter/Earlham wrestling will be the Class 2A District five tournament beginning at 12 p.m. Saturday, Feb 15 from Knoxville High School.
