If you weren’t careful and you blinked, you may have missed Kaden Sutton capturing his state tournament opening round victory Thursday, Feb. 20.
The senior and top-seeded wrestler wasn’t on the mats inside Wells Fargo Arena long as he bested 16-seed Chase Crooks of Charles City in just one minute and 22 seconds. That bumped up Sutton’s overall record to 37-1. He will look to make that 38 wins when he battles his quarterfinal opponent and eighth-seeded Chris Van Der Brink of Boyden Hull-Rock Valley Friday.
“Kaden did everything we planned for against his opponent today,” said head coach Christopher Hatchitt. “We talked about going out with hustle and effort and going out with that aggressive style that got him here to state in the first place. He set the match and dictated the tempo really well today.”
It will be his second consecutive quarterfinal appearance in the last two seasons.
