The Van Meter wrestling team will be sending five wrestlers to the district tournament in Adel on Saturday. Bailey Tuma (106), Luke Costlow (120), Chase Wyant (138), Spencer Benton (220) and Cole Ridgely (285) are the wrestlers competing for a chance to represent the Bulldogs at the state tournament in Des Moines.

Tuma took second place at 106 pounds. He had a first-round bye before beating Carlisle’s Jordan Watts by fall in the semifinals. He lost 6-0 in the finals to Winterset’s Britton Gibson and then defeated Clarke’s Ian Showers by decision 14-10 in the second-place match.

Costlow took first place in the 120-pound weight class winning by fall in the semifinals over Carlisle’s Jeremy Boothroyd and then winning by major decision over Winterset’s Derek Koster 9-1.

Wyant cruised through the 138-pound weight class getting first place after beating Winterset’s Blake McCauley in the semifinals and Central Decatur’s Clayton Dale in the finals, both by fall.

Benton also pinned his way to first place beating Carlisle’s Andrew Hill in the semifinals and Interstate 35’s Garret Thompson in the finals both by fall in the 220-pound weight class.

Ridgley got first place in the 285-pound weight class winning against Central Decatur’s Austin Blades by fall in the semifinals and Interstate 35’s Bobby Heilman by decision 6-0 in the finals.

The five Bulldogs will wrestle at the district tournament in Adel on Saturday. The tournament starts at noon.
