Urbandale resident raises over $1,400 for cancer awareness group

Daphane Trevillyan of Urbandale recently held Strike Out Breast Cancer fundraiser to honor breast cancer survivor Katie Mangan of Waukee.

Mangan was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer in 2009 and now has been cancer free for over a year.

Trevillyan became involved in Mangan’s group, Katie’s Crusaders, after being involved in another non-profit organization.

“I started having thoughts at the beginning of this year that I wanted to do a bowling event similar to Bowl for the Cure that the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) holds,” she said. “I have a passion for helping those in my community and knew that I needed to get in touch with Katie to see if she would be the recipient of the money we raised during the event. From that moment on, I started organizing Strike Out Breast Cancer and reaching out to individuals in Iowa to have them participate.”

The event, including bowling, a silent auction and a 50/50 drawing, raised over $1,400 for the group.

“When you’re going through breast cancer, the last thing you want to worry about is what to do when something breaks or your bills need paid,” Trevillyan said. “I am so glad to have had the opportunity to meet Katie and be a part of raising money for this great organization. I can’t begin to thank the individuals and businesses that bowled, volunteered and donated enough for all that you did.”

Those who would like to be involved can donate online at www.katiescrusaders.org, or volunteer in the 5k or 10k walk/run at Centennial Park on Oct. 12.
