Speed limit may decrease near Waukee school
Back in August, Waukee South Middle School sixth grader Kate Dressel was struck by a car as she crossed LA Grant Parkway on her way home from school and suffered a head injury. In order to prevent similar accidents in the future, the Waukee City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance change at Monday’s meeting to reduce the speed limit near the school.
Residents hope to change the speed limits, extending the 35-mph zone 600 feet south of the school on LA Grant Parkway, where the current speed limit is 45 mph. During pick-up and drop-off times, the zone in front of the middle school changes to 25 mph. The 35-mph zone is expected by city officials to extend further south toward Ashworth Road when new middle and high schools open in the fall of 2015 on the same road, LA Grant Parkway.
