The Iowa Department of Natural Resources received a call at about 11 a.m. on Saturday of a man unresponsive in the water at Lake Panorama in Guthrie County. The man, identified as 19-year-old Ashton Maier of Grimes, passed away on Saturday evening at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

According to a news release issued by the DNR, Maier fell into the water while kayaking with friends, went under the water and “didn’t resurface for some time.” Bystanders performed CPR until paramedics arrived on scene and Maier was airlifted to Mercy Hospital where he passed away.

When Maier was found, he was not wearing a personal flotation device, but had one in his kayak.

The DNR is continuing to investigate the incident, according to the news release.

A fund for Maier has been set up at www.youcaring.com and those wishing to help fund medical and funeral expenses can donate to the fund at https://www.youcaring.com/ashtonmaier-852462.

“We are saddened to learn of the passing of our recent graduate, Ashton Maier. Counselors will be present at the HS from 9-3 tomorrow,” the tweet from @DCGHS read.

Maier graduated from Dallas Center-Grimes High School in May.
