Melissa Hepworth is the new owner of a hair salon that has been in Dallas Center for around 50 years.

“There have been two previous owners, both of which are huge supporters, so there has been a long history of this salon location being open in Dallas Center.” Hepworth said. “All of the clientele from the previous owner have started coming to me and they have been amazing! I have also had quite a few new clients that have been great!”

The salon is now called Melissa Raye Hair Studio and is located at 1417 Walnut St., Dallas Center.

Hepworth attended Iowa School of Beauty in Urbandale. She has been working in hair for about four years at a couple different salons.

“I have also done hairstyling in a nursing home,” she said.

For the past two years, while earning her Associate’s Degree in Business, Hepworth worked for the Dallas Center-Grimes District as a special education associate.

Melissa Raye Hair Studio opened on June 13. Hepworth signed the paperwork on the space a few days before salons were closed due to COVID-19 concerns.

Hepworth shared that finding the salon location in Dallas Center happened by stumbling upon it.

“I saw an ad posted on Facebook and I fell in love from the first time I saw it,” Hepworth said. “I knew exactly what I wanted/needed to fit my personality and values and sometimes that is hard to find! I also loved the town and I am so excited to work with people in the community and find ways to get involved!”

To get the salon space ready, Hepworth said it was pretty easy.

“Going in, it was fully equipped with stations, chairs, dryers, etc., so it really came down to cleaning, reorganizing, taking my tools in, and of course, getting a new sign,” she said.

Moving forward, she wants to make some changes, but will do that at a later date.

Hepworth said she takes her time to get to know her clients.

“I’m very family-oriented and encourage parents to bring their children,” she said. “I’m very laid back and love to work with people.”

The current services provided include haircuts, color, highlight, balayage/ombre, fashion color, styles, updo, perms, facial waxing, deep conditioning treatments and manicures. Hepworth enjoys working with all ages. Men, women and children are welcome.

A typical appointment starts with Hepworth greeting the client. If she is ready for the next client, she immediately does a consultation in her chair.

“I believe that having a thorough consultation to help the client fully describe what they want is very important, so I ask quite a few questions.” Hepworth said.

Throughout the appointment, she enjoys visiting with her clients. If the client wishes, she finishes the appointment by styling their hair. Lastly, clients pay with either cash or card and schedule their next appointment.

Hepworth is cleaning and disinfecting all surfaces touched between each client. Every client receives a clean cape and tools that are used during their service.

“I am booking appropriately, based on each individual client, to make sure everyone is comfortable coming in,” Hepworth said.

She requests that clients call and reschedule the appointment if anyone is experiencing symptoms or have been in contact with someone who has COVID-19. She says wearing masks is up to the client.

“I am still taking new clients and walk-ins, but I ask that you wait by the desk until I can help you,” she said.

In addition to offering hair services, Hepworth plans on having a small gift shop area. This will include locally made items among other things.

“There will be something for everyone, ranging from hair accessories to earrings to 3D printed keychains,” she said. “I also have a complimentary coffee and tea bar for those who stop in!”

Currently, Hepworth sells hair products. She typically carries Matrix, Redken and Kenra. She has a few other miscellaneous tried and true products that are her favorites. If she doesn’t carry a product, she has offered to get it in for her clients.

Hepworth’s mother is also a cosmetologist and plans to work at the salon. Having a third stylist is in Hepworth’s future plans.

To schedule an appointment, call the salon at 515-992-3378 or message Hepworth through her Melissa Raye Hair Studio page on Facebook or on Instagram @melissarayehairstudio. Hepworth welcomes people to stop in to make appointments as well. Another option to follow Hepworth, is on her Twitter account @melissarayehair.

The current business hours are, Monday, by appointment, Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Hepworth wants Dallas County to know that she is trustworthy.

“I am someone they can come and talk to just to pass some time,” she said. “I am here for all of their hair needs and always put customers first!”
