Zhoosh moves from pop-up business to store front in Grimes
After operating as a pop up business since the beginning of 2019, owners Andi Smeltzer and Josie Smeltzer of Zhoosh have officially opened a store front located in Grimes. The business, which currently specializes in home decor, accessories, furniture and vintage items, first came about from the two owner’s love of interior design and decorating.
Andi Smeltzer said that together the two sister-in-laws wanted to create a specific vibe and experience for others to enjoy.
“We honestly just like making things pretty, and the literal definition of zhoosh is ‘to make things more lively,’” Smeltzer said. “We truly believe elevating any space or ritual can elevate a person’s overall experiences and create more joy and fulfillment in the everyday.”
The two friends originally began the business as a pop up not only to help minimize start-up costs but also to help provide the flexibility needed in their hours of operations. Both Andi and Josie currently work full time in addition to the hours spent at their company. However, the two owners quickly discovered that running a pop-up business was not necessarily as easy as they had thought it would be.
“We spent so much of our time setting-up and tearing down, so there was always a bit of a crippling exhaustion after each event we did,” Smeltzer said. “Popping-up was a great way to start getting our name out there, but it didn’t allow us to fully show who we are or what we are trying to do.”
By owning the new store front, Smeltzer said that both her and Josie will be able to put more time and energy into areas such as sourcing one of a kind products, offering new services, hosting events and making their vision come to life. In fact, one of the things that the two women are most looking forward to is having a place to call their own regardless of space, time, or weather restrictions.
In addition, Zhoosh currently offers handmade jewelry from locally owned businesses as well as gifts such as candles and lifestyle items.
“We are very much an eclectic mix and love giving a vintage piece of furniture a new more modern life,” Smeltzer said. “Our vision is to have unique product offerings that are inclusive and approachable to all because everyone deserves to have beautiful things and hold a space that makes them feel special.”
Zhoosh is currently located at 208 SE Main Street in Grimes and operates Friday’s between 2-6 p.m. and Saturday’s between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Since Zhoosh didn’t officially have a building prior to the outbreak of COVID-19, the “new” way of operating as a retail business is technically considered their “normal.” Both masks and hand sanitizing stations are available for customers visiting the store, and the owners currently work to purify the air naturally by diffusing essential oil blends that have disinfectant properties.
Those interested in learning more about the company’s hours of operations and current business practices can visit Zhoosh on either their Instagram or Facebook page.
“We love Grimes. It’s close to home, it’s growing but still feels quaint, and most of all the amazing space we were lucky to find,” Smeltzer said. “We are so excited to be a part of the Grimes community, and can’t for people to come in and hang with us.”
