Two die in crashes on Interstate 80 in Dallas County
Two people were killed Sunday afternoon in crashes on Interstate Highway 80 in Dallas County.
Samuel Wayne Kasap, 19, of Earlham was driving a 1980 Chevrolet Corvette westbound on Interstate 80 near De Soto when he lost control around 1:15 p.m., entered the median and hit a cable guard rail, according to an Iowa State Patrol Crash report and patrol spokesperson Sgt. Alex Dinkla.
The Corvette accelerated "to a high rate of speed" from the De Soto on-ramp, rolled over and came to a rest in the eastbound lanes, according to the crash report. Kasap was killed in the crash and a passenger was injured and taken to a central Iowa hospital. Neither was wearing a seatbelt, according to the crash report.
At 3:15 p.m., a semitrailer in a westbound lane on Interstate 80 was stopped east of Van Meter due to traffic backed up from the previous crash, Dinkla said. The truck was rear-ended by a minivan, the driver of which was killed in the crash. Kenneth Mueller, 25, of Urbandale was identified Tuesday morning as the driver of the van, according to a crash report.
Through Oct. 11, 262 people have died on Iowa roads this year, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation, up from 255 at the same point in 2020.
