Pilot snaps stunning photo from above Des Moines showing glow of Chicago, Orion's Belt
An amateur photographer and UPS pilot took a stunning photo recently while flying over Des Moines.
Kelly Lepley, 52, of Anchorage, Alaska, is a captain on UPS Boeing 747 cargo flights with about 20,000 hours of flying experience.
Lepley was on a UPS cargo flight from Anchorage to Louisville, Kentucky, around 1:45 a.m. Saturday when clear skies offered an impressive sight — Chicago glowing like the sunrise to the east, with all three stars in the Orion's Belt constellation shining above.
"It's a fascinating thing when you can see the world from that vantage point," Lepley said by phone from her home in Anchorage.
Lepley keeps her eye out for impressive scenes in her travels for work, which she said has taken her to about 20 countries. She keeps her camera handy and posts her favorite photos at @kclepley on Twitter, where she has about 33,000 followers.
"People are very interested in the world they live in, aviation and the fact a woman is flying a 747," Lepley said. "I want to draw interest in aviation."
