DC-G girls win first — and last — RRC title
The Dallas Center-Grimes girls’ golf team won its first — and last Racooon River Conference crown on Monday.
The Fillies beat A-D-M 393-415 at Terrace Hills Golf Course in Altoona, their final RRC meet before departing for the Little Hawkeye Conference next year.
DC-G was led by Taryn Gholson, who medaled with an 18-hole score of 79, three stroke ahead of runner-up Shelby Townsend of Perry.
“Before teeing off on Monday, I told the girls there was no reason to feel nervous as everyone is chasing us,” said first-year coach John Klaessy, who was named the conference coach of the year. “If we just play our game, the other teams would have to take it up a notch to catch us.”
Sam Zamzow finished fifth overall with a 98, Sara Beeler carded a 105 and Michaela Fay a 111. Also golfing for the Fillies were Laura Beeler and C.C. Shutt.
A-D-M also landed two all-conference golfers. Lauren Lange finished third overall with a 97, while Taylor Boorn carded an even 100 to finish seventh. Lexi Owen carded a 107, Megan Newton had a 111, Hayley Willems a 112 and Jaycee Mandernach a 114 to round out the lineup.
Both schools will travel May 20 to Newton for a regional meet at Westwood Golf Club. The field there includes fellow RRC members Ballard, Carlisle, Winterset and Perry, as well as Grinnell, Vinton-Shellsburg, Norwalk, Creston and Webster City.
“This win is a huge boost of confidence for the team going into regionals,” Klaessy said.
