Boys’ basketball substate pairings released
The Iowa High School Athletics Association has released pairings for the district and substate boys’ basketball tournaments, which start for Dallas Center-Grimes on Monday, Feb. 23.
The Mustangs are in the District 13 bracket in Class 3A and if they take first, will play against the District 14 champion in the Substate 7 bracket.
Along with the Mustangs (14-4) in District 13 are Bondurant-Farrar (11-6), Grinnell (10-7) and Saydel (9-9). Last season, the Mustangs were upset by Bondurant-Farrar in the substate finals and saw their state championship hopes vanish after blowing a 44-37 lead that they took into the fourth quarter.
In the first round of the district tournament the Mustangs will take on Saydel. The Mustangs have not played Saydel yet this season and this will be their first meeting since the District tournament last season, where the Mustangs won by a score of 61-24.
If the Mustangs win, they will play either Bondurant-Farrar or Grinnell in the finals in Ankeny on Thursday, Feb. 26. They haven’t played Bondurant-Farrar yet this season, but they have played Grinnell twice, winning the first matchup by a score of 54-47 back on Friday, Jan. 9 and the second meeting on Friday, Feb. 6 by a score of 70-50.
Taking first in District 13 would send the Mustangs to the Substate 7 finals where they will take on the champion of District 14, which consists of Gilbert (16-2), Ballard (9-9), Perry (13-5) and Boone (6-11). The Mustangs haven’t played Gilbert this season but they have played the other three teams once each.
The Mustangs defeated Ballard back on Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2014 by a score of 56-42 in Grimes, they defeated Perry by a score of 67-54 on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2014 in Perry and they beat Boone 59-51 in Grimes on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014.
The Mustangs first District 13 tournament game against Saydel is on Monday, Feb. 23 and begins at 6:30 p.m. at Bondurant-Farrar High School.
