Panther Notes: Will Jones Throws No-No, VA Wins Tourney

Brian GossetStaff Writer

Will Jones (1-0) was untouchable throwing a no-hitter in the Van Alstyne Panthers official season opener, 3-0 over Prairieland on March 12.

No Prairieland batter was able to locate Jones’ pitches during the game as he struck out 10 batters and walked three. He only needed 91 pitches as the Panthers began play in the GCEC Panther Baseball Classic.

“I felt good warming up, kind of got rushed because we didn’t know when we’d start. I didn’t get much pitches in the bullpen, but I just went out there and relied on my stuff,” Jones said. “Sometimes you just have to get lucky, I guess.”

Van Alstyne got its bats going early, scoring three runs in the first inning to give enough cushion for Jones. The Panthers scored in the first on an error, a fielder’s choice, and an RBI single by JD Frazier.

Kearon Redmon was solid at the plate, finishing 2 for 3 and scored one run. He singled in the first inning and doubled in the second.

Like the Lady Panthers, the baseball team had a long rest period due to weather but the Panthers have responded well.

“It kind of throws you off a bit because in the past we’ll play scrimmage after scrimmage and play in tournaments and going smooth, but this year we’ve been off and we kind of struggled out there on the bases,” Jones said. “Once we get back going again, we’ll be looking good.”

The Panthers went up 4-0 after two when they tagged Lone Oak pitcher Kevin Smith for three runs in the second. Phillips ripped one to center bringing home Redmon in the first while Hillebrenner tripled in Lawrence and scored on a pass ball for a 3-0 lead in the second.
