Howe Girls Reel off Impressive Pair of District Wins

The Howe Lady Bulldogs got off to a fast start and escaped a trap game in Ponder on Tuesday night, outscoring the Lady Lions in a 55-41 win.

Howe (16-6,5-1) jumped out to a 13-7 first quarter lead and coasted home with the win.

Ponder had only lost to Pottsboro in District 10-3A play and was looking to pull off the upset. That didn’t happen as the Lady Bulldogs got 21 points and 17 rebounds from Riley Harvey, her third consecutive double-double effort.

Howe held a 10-point lead at the half and avoided any letdowns, outscoring Ponder 28-24 in the second half.

Alissa Smith scored nine points and Holly Hawkins added eight, with four rebounds.

The Lady Bulldogs host Whitesboro Friday night as the first half of district play concludes.

Much like the random innocent person who gets caught up in nefarious deeds, the Callisburg Lady Wildcats were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Coming off of a very disappointing loss to Pottsboro, the Howe Lady Bulldogs were not taking prisoners at home on Jan. 8 as they ambushed Callisburg 60-21 in a District 10-3A clash.

“Our practices over the past couple of days have really been intense. We just wanted to show we could play better,” Howe senior post Riley Harvey said.

Howe used its full-court defense to completely stymie the Lady Wildcats, holding them to just seven points total in the first three quarters.

Alissa Smith dropped in a pair of 3-point bombs in the first period, while Darci Foster had one from deep as Howe got off to a 16-4 start.

Peyton Streetman started the second quarter scoring with a 3-ball, and Harvey ended the 21-point period with a rebound put-back that gave the Lady Bulldogs a 37-6 lead at the break.

After scoring the first three Howe buckets to open the second half, the last coming off a nice find by Streetman from the top of the post, Harvey’s night was done. She finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds, but that earlier loss to Pottsboro was still on her mind after the game.

“It was obvious that we didn’t play our best game and we have worked hard to get better as a team. We lost our composure and everyone on the team owns it,” Harvey said of the loss to Pottsboro.

A 3-pointer by Kamryn Fulenchek opened the fourth period scoring, and, with the exception of an old-school three-point play by Landry Rhoten, everything else in the period came from the free-throw line.

After a trip to Ponder, Howe will host Whitesboro on Jan. 15.
