VM girls’ basketball continues great season

Staff Report

Van Meter girls’ basketball is currently riding a three-game winning streak after defeating Madrid at home on Tuesday, Jan. 19. VM dominated its opponent, 61-38.

The Bulldogs wasted no time in crushing Madrid and scored 28 points in the first quarter. The team was able to coast to victory behind the impressive scoring output of Mackenzie Roberts, who posted 29 points on 12-of-18 shooting. Roberts made all four of her free throws and tallied five rebounds, three steals, two assists and two blocks.

Junior CJ Jones added 11 points, including connecting on three three-pointers. Erica Scieszinski and Emily Roberts each scored 5 points. Roberts also helped out with four rebound and four assists. Junior Ellie Folkerts contributed five boards in the victory, three of which were on the offensive end.

The game followed another big win over Winterset on Saturday, Jan. 16, when the Bulldogs came out on top, 51-30. VM held Winterset to just two points in the first quarter on its way to victory.

The team was led by Jones’ 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Jones knocked down four three-pointers. Roberts chipped in 13 points, nine rebounds, four steals, three blocks and two assists.

Folkerts performed well with seven points and seven boards. Also helping in the win were Chelsea Bright and Bailey Junge, who each posted five points.

A three-game winning streak is exactly what the Bulldogs need to keep confidence levels high. If Roberts continues to play at such a high level, this team is poised to have a very successful season. However, it’s important to remember that basketball is a team game.

VM’s next opponent is Woodward-Granger. The Bulldogs will host the game on Friday, Jan. 22 and look to improve upon their already impressive 13-2 record.
